WHAT TO DO IN A GAS EMERGANCY
If you think you can smell gas, you must act quickly. Follow the steps below immediately.
1: Open all doors and windows immediately to ventilate the room.
2: Turn off any gas appliances in the property.
3: Turn off the gas supply at the mains. This is normally found at the gas meter position.
4: Call the National Emergency gas number: 0800 111 999
Do not smoke, light matches or operate any electrical switches.
What happens next?
The emergency service provider will attend your property and make safe.
This means they will check that a gas leak is present and ascertain if it on you side of the meter pipe work or the service providers pipe work, meter, emergency control valve or the meter.
If the gas leak is on the service provider’s side they will repair the leak at no cost to you.
If the leak is present on your side of the meter then they will turn off and disconnect the supply and issue a warning notice.
It is then your responsibility to contact a Gas safe registered engineer to repair the leak and reinstate the gas supply to your property.
