An unvented cylinder is one of the best hot water systems you can have installed in your property. They’re able to give more than double the flow rate of a standard 24KW combination boiler and are much more hygienic than open vented systems. So, what exactly is an unvented cylinder, and why is it a great addition to your home?
An unvented cylinder acts as a storage for your water supply and is normally made out of steel. It is connected directly to the cold water main pipe that enters your property from the street.
Due to the system being closed from atmosphere, it is “unvented.”
The cylinder is filled with cold water and is then heated via a boiler or electrical heating element. The amount of water the cylinder stores will depend on the size of the cylinder specified. It is very important that the correct size is chosen. If all of the stored hot water is used, there is a delay of normally 20-30 minutes with a boiler connected, or 1-2 hours with an electrical element before the water is hot again.
If the cylinder is depleted of water during a bath or shower, this will cause great discomfort for you. That’s why it’s crucial that the cylinder is sized properly, according to your needs.
What are the Advantages of an Unvented Cylinder?
Hot water is delivered at the main’s pressure; this is typically at 2-3 bar pressure (1 bar equals 10 metres of head). The advantage is that you get a power shower without the expense and noise of a powerful pump.
No cold water storage tanks are needed, as the cylinder is fed directly from the main’s cold water supply.
With an open atmosphere cylinder (vented), tanks are required and normally sized 50 to 100 gallons. Tanks are a breeding ground for bacteria, especially Legionnaires’ disease, if not maintained correctly. Leaks can also occur as a result of damage to the property.
If not installed correctly, unvented cylinders are dangerous and potential time bombs. We do not recommend installing them on your own; they should never be installed by anyone who doesn’t hold the correct qualifications (G3) allowing them to work on unvented cylinders.
